Our actual name is Reno Typographers. We say Reno Type because it’s easier to spell and remember, and because it’s a reminder of where we came from. You see, we’ve been a part of the printing industry since type was made out of lead. Really! Today, we’re a full-service printing company, mailing house and promotional product consultant.Think of Reno Type as a quality boutique where you can find just what you’re looking for, just when you need it. Brochures, postcards, sales sheets, rack cards, letterhead, business cards, posters and mailers. Anything on paper.
And far from the printed page you’ll find millions of everyday products that we bring to life. Mugs. Pens. Awards. Apparel. Lapel Pins. Journals. Key-chains, Totebags. If you can imagine it, we can make it!
Reno Type started in 1978 when one man put a particularly large toy in his garage. Elmer was a retired salesman for Mergenthaler, and in 1979, the Mergenthaler VIP was the most advanced piece of typesetting equipment in the world. Elmer thought Reno needed one, and so Reno Type was born.
The firm moved to offices on Bell Street in the early 1980’s and continued to stay on the cutting edge of modern typography. By 1986, Reno Type had a Linotronic 300 imagesetter, the first true digital typesetting device. We became one of the first west-coast installations of the Linotype RIP-1, which was soon followed by the RIP-2 and 3. Then Reno Type acquired the first film-capable imagesetter in the area, the Linotronic 330.
Linotype merged with the German scanner manufacturer, Hell, and so their proprietary screening algorithm for color separation found its way into Postscript RIPs. In the late 1980’s Reno Type installed the RIP 30, RIP 40 and RIP 50, and we became a color separator.
The addition of scanning equipment by Scitex in the mid 1990’s marked a big change for Reno Type. Instead of just outputting customer-supplied files to film and making proofs, we were now a full-service pre-press provider. We scanned slides, transparencies and artboards at the front end, combined those with our typography or client supplied layouts, and generated composed film and matchprints.
In order to meet changing quality expectations and advanced technology needs of our customers, in 1997 Reno Type installed the first Digital printing press in the state of Nevada: The Agfa Chromapress. Ours was serial number 32, making it one of the first in the world. In 1997, these capabilities were magic. Reno Type had become a printing firm.
As we grew, we moved from Bell Street to Ridge Street, from Ridge Street to South Meadows, and finally to our current location on Rock Blvd.
In August 2021, we successfully acquired CDMS, the full-service logistics, document management and promotional company so many have come to know and trust. Reno Type’s clients have benefited from the cutting-edge warehousing, on-line ordering and fulfillment services of CDMS, and CDMS’s clients now benefit from the in-house printing, mailing and omni-channel marketing expertise of Reno Type. More capabilities. More expertise. Faster turn-arounds. It’s a win-win-win!
